"Speak Out' with Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Discusses 100 Years of Women's Suffrage with Dr. Gerald Benjamin and Dr. Eve Walte
As the centennial of Women's Suffrage approaches, Assemblywoman Sandy Galef discusses an upcoming conference on the suffrage movement.

(January 11, 2016) Assemblywoman Sandy Galef speaks with Dr. Gerald Benjamin, Director of the Benjamin Center for Public Policy Initiatives at SUNY New Paltz and Dr. Eve Waltermaurer, Director of Research and Evaluation at the Benjamin Center. They are organizing a conference for the 100 year anniversary of women acquiring the right to vote in the State of New York. It was an historic moment, the culmination of a long fight in which New York became the first state east of the Mississippi to grant such rights. The conference is scheduled to take place in April 2017. Besides attracting scholars, the conference would like to give voice to the people with personal as well as family connections to the long and ongoing struggle for equal rights.
Dr. Benjamin explains that the conference will be divided into three parts. The first will update our understanding of the past and is intended to provide context for understanding the second and third parts which are concerned with the present and future. Both he and Dr. Waltermaurer explain how debates over new issues and tactics reflect changing demographics and economic developments. It is no longer only higher income white women who are setting the agenda. The conversation about voting rights easily slips into interesting observations about where women are today in the job market, the roles men and women play in modern marriages, and where various issues stand in state and national legislatures.
Galef comments, “This is going to be a fascinating conference. It will be interesting to hear about the new interpretations of the past as well as the ideas people have of where we should go from here.”
