"Speak Out" with Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Discusses Changes in the World of Policing with Chiefs Eric Johansen and Joseph Bu

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef speaks with Chief Eric Johansen of the Peekskill Police Department, and Joseph Burton, who recently retired from the Ossining Police Department after 48 years, including 24 as Chief, about the ways in which policing has changed during their careers on “Speak Out with Sandy Galef: Policing; Past, Present, and Future.”

Burton, who retired at the end of 2015 from the Ossining Police Department, discusses the changes in the process of getting a job as a police officer since he first started, and details the complicating factors that elongate the process. Johansen, a lifelong Peekskill resident who started his career in the police force in the 1990s, and Burton both detail the current issues facing police officers, the changes in crime over the years, and the importance of building a relationship with students in the communities they serve.

Galef comments, “I hope that this conversation sheds light on the challenges and experiences of the people who help us to build safe, healthy communities.”
