"Speak Out" with Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Presents Self Help Shouldn't Be Dangerous

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Speaks About the Possible Dangers of Self Help Seminars on her TV show "Speak Out"

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef speaks with Virginia Brown, Founder of SEEK SAFELY, Inc. and Kathleen Brady, CPC, principal of Career Planners, LLC, about the importance of understanding what you are signing up for when you attend a self-help seminar.

Brown speaks about the tragic loss of her daughter Kirby Brown, who died at a self-help seminar in Arizona in 2011, and explains to the viewers that a lot of self-help speakers and counselors that run these events and seminars have no professional experience or training. She speaks about the dangers of participating in the physical components of these seminars because often times the people that run the events do not have any medical training or expertise. Brown states that, “Our mission is to educate the public about the fact that this is an unregulated industry, just to create that kind of awareness.”

Brady, a recognized expert on stress reduction and other life skills shares her personal life philosophy with viewers, which is to remember “you always have a choice.” Brady is a Certified Professional Coach and possesses other credentials which make her organization a safe venue to turn to for help with life guidance.

Assemblywoman Galef adds that, “Everything goes so fast in our lives, we cannot necessarily do in depth reading on topics, so we use our iPhones and try to figure out things quickly.” Because this is an unregulated industry people cannot take these self-proclaimed ‘gurus’ and experts at their word. We should take the time to fully investigate how these types of events are run.

Brown and Brady state that they are not out to demonize or discourage the idea of seeking help, they just want people that need or want help to ask more questions and be aware.
