Support ETPA for Ossining

By: Sean Reilly, Ossining Resident

I am a 40+ year resident of Ossining, and my family has been in Ossining for over 65 years. I am a tenant who will not benefit from ETPA but am in full support of the policy as it is greatly needed in Ossining.

Ossining is a great place to call home. I have seen many good residents who are tenants leave this community -- a community that devoted their time in bettering and a community that has benefited from their good deeds -- due to unpredictable rents increases of over 12% per year for a few years. They are hard working class people that contribute to and care about their community. Teachers, first responders, and volunteers are a benefit to any community and ETPA would help protect their rights as a tenant.

ETPA is a vital part of a bigger plan to keep Ossining affordable for all. It guarantees 1-2 year leases for all tenants, protects tenants from unfair landlord practices and ensures repairs to standard household issues. The rent increases that tenants are experiencing are creating a revolving door of residents and tenants as each year more are forced to move because they can not afford the increases.

A long-term resident will certainly care, respect, and do more for their community versus a short term resident. Supporting and passing ETPA is just another way to keep Ossining strong by having long term residents that care about where they live and be able to stay in Ossining. ETPA has not lowered property values or increased taxes for homeowners in 19 other municipalities in Westchester, and Ossining should be the next village that passes ETPA.
