Is a Weekend Winter Storm Brewing In The Hudson Valley?

It's been a pretty snow-free winter so far, but that could change this coming weekend.

Let's get this out the way: it's Tuesday. The weekend is a long way away. That said, forecasters are beginning to keep a close eye on a storm system that could bring snow to the Hudson Valley on Sunday.

There's a storm coming from the Midwest, which is expected to dump snow to our south. However, a secondary storm is forecast to develop near the North Carolina coast and take over as the main storm on Sunday.

Between those two systems, there's the potential for accumulating snow and slippery conditions as far north as southeastern New York and southern New England, said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. "Slow, slippery and dangerous travel conditions are expected to unfold in these areas."

Right now, the National Weather Service says we've got a 30 percent chance of snow Sunday and Sunday night.

It'll be nothing like the lake-effect storm expected to dump a foot of snow on most of upstate New York beginning late Tuesday night and continuing through the day Thursday across the state. In the Mid-Hudson Region, one to three inches of snowfall is expected.

If you're heading to or from Western New York and the North Country, travel with caution over the next 36 hours as driving conditions may grow difficult due to snow covered roads and limited visibility.

Something to keep in mind about that Global Forecast System (GFS) model, too: that model has been running poorly recently and there's no one on duty at the National Weather Service to fix it thanks to the government shutdown, the Washington Post reports.
