Wintry Mix, Chance Of Snow To End Holiday Week

Here are the latest weather forecasts through New Year's Day.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A wintry mix may fall on the Hudson Valley Thursday, but by the end of the work week, we'll be looking at temps in the mid 50s. Then there's a chance of snow over New Year's.

Coming up first, the National Weather Service says precipitation Thursday and Friday may begin as a wintry mix for portions of the Lower Hudson Valley and southern Connecticut late Thursday night. However, warmer temperatures will bring a changeover to rain by Friday morning.

Temperatures on Friday are likely to reach the middle 50s for the entire region.

"Our next threat of unsettled weather appears to be Thursday night and Friday, as a major storm system will push into the Midwest," said Alex Marra and Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "This will bring warming temperatures and a chance of rain by Thursday night. Unlike the previous storm system, rainfall amounts look to be closer to a half inch. So flooding concerns should be minimal."

After that, a careful projection into the following week finds some snow possible overnight New Year's Eve or on New Year's Day.

Early indications are that temperatures across the Northeast will not be as cold as last year, said Brett Rathbun, AccuWeather meteorologist. Still, he said, if there is enough cold air in place, there could also be snow in New York City on Monday night.
