Yom Kippur Appeal: Food Bank of Westchester

The Westchester Jewish Council and the Food Bank work together for the annual drive.

For the past 23 years, many Westchester congregations have deepened the significance of their Yom Kippur fast by donating to the Food Bank for Westchester.

Last year the Yom Kippur Appeal raised $38,000 and over 22,000 pounds of food to help feed the hungry of Westchester.

And there are hungry people in these affluent communities.

According to the most recent study conducted by Feeding America, there is a gap of nearly 15 million meals for Westchester County. Even though the Food Bank distributed 7.4 million pounds of food or 6.2 million meals, last year, it wasn’t enough, Food Bank officials said.

Westchester Jewish Council officials said they are partnering with the Food Bank on this effort again in 2014, working together to help raise awareness about hunger in Westchester and beyond.
