Mejias states, “I’ve predicated my whole career in both politics and the law on fighting for people who can’t fight for themselves. As a Latino, I know full well the sting of prejudice. I know it has a corrosive effect on a democracy – and I also know that bigotry can seep into every part of our society, if we allow it to go unchecked.”

The LGBT Network consists of non-profit organizations: the Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), The Long Island LGBT Community Center (The Center), Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders – Long Island (SAGE-LI), and the Queens LGBT Community Center (Q Center), each serving their local LGBT communities. The LGBT Network gives the means to confront harmful laws meant to deprive people of their basic rights, instilling in our youth and their parents an education and awareness of how people are supposed to be treated, no matter their religion, race, ethnicity or sexual preference.
