Police said the car was struck at about 12:30 p.m. by a westbound diesel train that was approaching Huntington Station.
The woman apparently panicked when she found herself on the tracks with the crossing gate coming down and the train approaching, police said.
As a result of the incident, service on the Port Jefferson Branch between Huntington and Port Jefferson was suspended for about an hour, officials said.
