Park Slope Could Be Linked To Red Hook With New Train Line, MTA Says
The MTA is considering extending the W line from lower Manhattan along the Brooklyn waterfront, possibly linking Red Hook and Park Slope.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN â Park Slopers could take the subway to Red Hook one day, according to transit officials.
Documents released this week say that the MTA will study extending the W train from lower Manhattan to the northwest Brooklyn waterfront, creating several stations in Red Hook, which has markedly few public transit options.
As proposed, new neighborhood stations would include Columbia Waterfront station at Columbia and Kane streets, Atlantic Basin station at Van Brunt and Verona streets and Red Hook station at Lorraine and Hicks streets.

One of the proposed stations, the transit agency said, could connect back to Park Slope by way of the Fourth Avenue-Ninth Street station, currently served by the F, G and R trains.
The W train extension though, is far from a guarantee, and isn't likely to start anytime soon, according to the MTA.

Instead, it is one of two dozen projects that officials will evaluate as they consider how to upgrade the city's transit system over the next 20 years.
The two dozen proposals will be studied until October 2023, at which point the MTA can pick a few to receive funding starting in 2025. The chosen projects would then be built anytime between 2025 and 2044.
"This process documents which investments are needed to serve the region for the next generation," MTA officials wrote.
Asked about the likelihood that the W train extension will come to fruition, MTA spokesperson Sean Butler told Patch "The cost and benefits of this project are being evaluated on a level playing field with the other projects listed and the results will help inform our planning efforts."
"While more than 80 percent of our Capital Program is dedicated to state of good repair and core infrastructure needs, expansion projects can help meet new mobility needs and address transportation inequities," he said.
