UPDATE: 5-Year-Old in NYC Hospital Tests Negative For Ebola

The boy, who just returned from West Africa, was tested for the deadly virus on Monday.

Update 6:30 p.m.-

The Ebola test has come back negative for the boy, health officials said Monday evening.

“Out of an abundance of caution, further negative Ebola tests are required on subsequent days to ensure that the patient is cleared,” the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said in a statement on its website. “The patient will also be tested for common respiratory viruses. The patient will remain in isolation until all test results have returned.”

The child is a 5-year-old boy who returned from Guinea with his family on Saturday night, The New York Post reports.

Initial reports stated that boy was vomiting and had a 103-degree fever at his home in the Bronx before being transported to Bellevue Hospital Center Sunday night, but city health officials said the boy did not have a fever when he initially arrived at the hospital.

Officials said the boy developed a fever while at the hospital at 7 a.m. Monday.

“After consulting with the hospital and CDC, DOHMH decided to conduct a test for the Ebola virus, because of this patient’s recent travel history and pattern of symptoms. DOHMH and HHC are also evaluating the patient for other causes of illness in children,” the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said in a statement on its website.

Preliminary test results are expected by Monday night.

The boy’s family is currently being quarantined in their apartment, the New York Times reports.

The boy is at the same hospital where 33-year-old Dr. Craig Spencer is being treated for Ebola. Spencer, who recently returned from Guinea after working with Doctors Without Borders, tested positive for Ebola last Thursday.

Spencer was in serious but stable condition as of Sunday and looked “better” than he did on Saturday, officials said at a press conference on Sunday.
