New Program Will Bring the First Free Dental Clinic to Long Island this Fall
LONG ISLAND, NY, April 30, 2012 — According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics*, employment of dental hygienists is expected to grow by 38 percent from 2010 to 2020, a rate faster than the average for most occupations. This growth is due in part to the need of increasing access to oral healthcare with the services hygienists provide. To help meet this need and prepare students for career opportunities in dental hygiene, Briarcliffe College - Patchogue is now offering a new program for the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Dental Hygiene. The introduction of this program marks only the second dental hygiene educational program available to students on Long Island.
“As the demands for dental care increase, dentists delegate most patient education and preventive care responsibilities to dental hygienists,” said Dr. George Santiago, President and CEO of Briarcliffe College. “Our five semester program, which can be completed in 18 consecutive months, can help students pursue employment opportunities with the knowledge and clinical experience they need to help them succeed.”

In conjunction with the program, The College will open Long Island’s first free, community-based dental clinic in the Fall of 2012. The clinic will be open to the public and will offer Briarcliffe students the opportunity to provide dental hygiene services, expanding the community’s access to dental care.
This new academic program is currently enrolling students for the program that will begin on May 16, 2012.
