Board Refuses Parking Prohibition for Jennings Street Resident

Patchogue Village Board of Trustees moved to refuse a request to ban parking, stating it's for the street's greater good

The Patchogue Village Board of Trustees unanimously passed a motion to deny a resident’s request to prohibit parking on Jennings Street at the meeting on Monday.

Richard Kemp approached the Board on this issue to make room for his 48-foot-long truck which has caused disagreements among him and his neighbors.

“If there are any vehicles parked in its range, it’s practically impossible to move it,” Kemp said. “This is the most practical way to alleviate this situation.”

The Board’s decision was made after taking the community’s greater interest into consideration.

“It’s one single resident looking for special treatment,” Trustee Joseph Keyes Jr. said. “I sympathize with him, but it’s not fair to the other taxpayers that we make these arrangements for him.”

Neighbor Ann Flower also opposed Kemp’s request, along with several other Jennings Street home owners, saying Kemp is the main source of disturbance- having once hit her son’s car and giving police a hard time- and prohibiting parking would be stressful.

“What he was asking for is insane, he was doing it out of vindictiveness,” Flower said. “We want to sell the house eventually, could you imagine telling the new owners they can’t park along the road?”
