Drunk Driver Crashes Into 2 Cop Cars, 5 Hurt: Police

A 22-year-old man is charged with DWI after crash early Sunday, Suffolk Police say. A passenger in his car was seriously injured.

SHIRLEY, NY - Five people were injured, one seriously, after a drunk driver crashed his car into two police cars in Shirley early Sunday, Suffolk Police said.

According to police, two Seventh Precinct officers were assisting a disabled motorist in the left lane of the southbound William Floyd Parkway when 22-year-old Jonathan Kunstadt, of Farmingville, crashed his 2003 Chevrolet Malibu into both police vehicles at about 3:30 a.m.

Kunstadt had five passengers in his vehicle at the time of the crash, one of whom, Gunnar Cortes, 22, of Mastic, was transported by Shirley Community Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, police said. Three other passengers were transported to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Both police officers and the male driver of the disabled car were outside the vehicles at the time of the crash, police said.

One officer was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries. The other officer and the driver of the disabled 2000 Nissan Maxima were not injured.

Kunstadt is charged with DWI and will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.
