"Involvement in youth gangs is not a new phenomenon in our country, however, it's a problem that has been escalating since the 1980s, particularly in suburban areas such as Long Island," said Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management Gigi Lamens. "It is our hope that this workshop will provide helpful information and strategies that school counselors and administrators can utilize to prevent their students from getting involved in gangs and in providing alternatives to gang involvement."
The program will examine common myths and realities of gangs on Long Island and in New York State. Topics addressed will include multi-ethnic factors, gang recruitment, reasons for joining and the impact gang violence has on all members of a community.
