Historic Patchogue Church Awarded $20K For Repairs

The 127-year-old church, which serves over 6,000 residents, was among 22 religious structures statewide to receive a grant.

PATCHOGUE, NY - A Patchogue church was among 22 historic religious properties to receiving a grant from the New York Landmarks Conservancy. The organization announced on Monday the properties across New York were awarded Sacred Sites Grants totaling $316,000.

Locally, the Congregational Church of Patchogue on 95 E Main Street was given $20,000 from the group. The money will go towards roof repair and project management for the 127-year-old church. The Congregational Church of Patchogue is a Romanesque Revival church, constructed in 1892 by architects Lawrence B. Valk and Sons.

The masonry structure has an asymmetrically placed tower and a slate, high pitched gable roof. The church serves 6,500 local residents every year through activities such as a soup kitchen and food pantry, health screenings, clothing distribution, homeless outreach, concerts and lectures.

"We are very pleased to be able to assist another diverse group of religious institutions," Peg Breen, President of The New York Landmarks Conservancy. said. "Aside from architectural merit, each one is an important community anchor."
