Man Dies While Competing in Long Island Triathlon

BREAKING: A 69-year-old man was participating in the 500-meter swim portion when a lifeguard noticed he was in distress, police say.

A 69-year-old man died while competing in a triathlon in Shirley Sunday morning, police said.

Vincent Fleck, of Mount Kisco, was participating in the 500-meter swim portion of the Smith Point Sprint Triathlon in Narrow Bay when a lifeguard noticed Fleck was in distress around 7:25 a.m.

The lifeguard transported Fleck via a canoe to a Mastic Beach Fire Department rescue boat, where an EMT began emergency first aid, police said.

Fleck was then transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead.

It is unknown if Fleck drowned or if he suffered a medical event, police said. An autopsy will be performed by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.
