Police have arrested a man who is accused of robbing four banks in 11 days in Center Moriches, Mastic and Shirley.

Between April 9-19, four banks were robbed by a man who demanded cash after presenting a threatening note to tellers, police said.

Using video surveillance and tips from members of the community, Pattern Crime Unit detectives identified the suspect as William Mendolia, 55, who police classified as homeless.

After identifying Mendolia, the Pattern Crime Unit placed him under surveillance and he was arrested at a relative’s home on Rutland Avenue in Mastic at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Mendolia was charged with four counts of third degree robbery for robbing the following banks, police said:

  • April 9 - HSBC, 1718 Montauk Highway, Mastic
  • April 13 - Empire National Bank, 1044 William Floyd Parkway, Shirley
  • April 16 - Chase Bank, 790 Main St., Center Moriches
  • April 19 - TD Bank, 530 William Floyd Parkway, Shirley

Mendolia will be held overnight at the Seventh Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
