In a statement to Patch, the agency would not comment about Torres' on-the-job status. Instead its public information office said that a Coram man had been arrested for "firing a gun in the air in Patchogue."

Torres had been involved in "a verbal dispute with an acquaintance outside her residence in Patchogue," police said, adding that following the argument, "Torres fled in his 2019 Honda CRV and fired shots in the air while in his vehicle and in the vicinity of the acquaintance and her friend."

Torres, 26, was charged with two counts of second-degree menacing and one count of prohibited use of a weapon, both misdemeanors, following an investigation by 5th Squad detectives.

Police could not immediately say why a news release had not been issued about Torres' arrest.

Torres was released on his own recognizance, according to online court records.

Torres, an officer since December 2020 assigned to the 23rd Precinct in East Harlem, was suspended without pay following his arrest, according to The Daily News.

This is the second arrest of an off-duty NYPD cop within a week in Suffolk.

Douglas Debonet was arrested after a road rage incident in Selden after breaking a motorist's side view mirror on Saturday and then going to the victim's house later that day and waving a gun at a family member, Newsday reported.

In a statement to Patch on Tuesday, Suffolk police said Debonet, 32, of Selden got out of his vehicle at Old Town Road and County Road 83 in Selden and broke a side view mirror on a vehicle at about 11:20 a.m., and later that day, he went to the driver's home and was involved in an altercation with the driver's father.

Police confirmed Debonet "displayed a firearm," but could not say when because he had already been arraigned. A spokeswoman could also not confirm he is a member of the NYPD.

NYPD brass told Newsday that Debonet has been suspended without pay.

A Suffolk police spokeswoman could not say why a news release was not issued by the department.

Debonet was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree menacing, both misdemeanors, police said. He was released on his own recognizance and order of protection was issued after his arraignment in First District Court on Saturday, according to online court records.
