Patchogue's JusticeJam to Fight Human Trafficking

Long Island Against Trafficking hosts a music and arts benefit to fight human trafficking on Long Island on Sunday May 22 at 89 North.

Long Island musicians, artists and poets are coming together to fight against human trafficking at JusticeJam, a one-day music and arts benefit. The volunteer coalition of Long Island Against Trafficking (LIAT) will host the event on Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 1-6pm at 89 North Music Venue of Patchogue. Musicians will include Emily Lazio, Soundswell, HI DEF, and Ladies Drink Free. Those interested in enjoying amazing music, live art, and in advancing social justice are invited to attend.

A portion of proceeds will benefit the programs and services provided to child and adult human trafficking victims at the non-profit organization, The Safe Center LI. The remainder of proceeds from JusticeJam will help to kickstart the new organization, LIAT, as they continue to educate the community on this issue, visiting universities, religious institutions, places of employment, hotels, and more.

This all-ages event will feature food, vendors to shop, and raffle prizes. The Director of Human Trafficking from The Safe Center will present on the issue that is prevalent on our island. Trafficking is modern day slavery, and it is an issue within our state and on our island. The U.S. Department of Justice identified the top twenty trafficking jurisdictions in the county, which included both New York City and Long Island. Attendees can find out more about these issues through coalition members at the event.

Early bird tickets online are $15 until May 15th, and they will increase to $20 after that. Children 12 years old or younger are $10.

For more information and tickets, visit www.justicejam.org.

JusticeJam will be hosted by the volunteer coalition of Long Island Against Trafficking (LIAT). LIAT was founded when a group of individuals were awakened to the realities of human sex trafficking while attending a lecture. The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" resonated in our hearts and minds. We were compelled to join in the fight for those sex trafficked on Long Island and abroad.

Long Island Against Trafficking was established to raise funds for those victimized and raise public awareness of this modern-day form of slavery. We accomplish this by speaking at public and private events as well as lobbying at the local, state, and federal levels. We plan and host fundraisers to aid in financially supporting the victims. We also partner with other human rights organizations to create a powerful collective voice. To date, LIAT has raised more than $750,000 towards the aid of trafficking victims. Please join us in our goal to abolish sex trafficking.
