Long Island Sheriff To Unveil 1st-Of-Its-Kind Intelligence Center

It is a jail intelligence network to share data about potential threats, gang and drug activity, officials said.

YAPHANK, NY — The Suffolk County Sheriff's office will unveil a Corrections Intelligence Center on Wednesday in Yaphank.

The center is the first-of-its-kind jail intelligence network that will share data, trends, best practices, and potential threats across the jails and prisons, officials said in a news release.

The center will "proactively collect and disseminate trends about contraband, drugs, gang affiliations, and potential threats through this network of jail and prison systems in the New York and New Jersey area," officials said.

The center is fully staffed with corrections intelligence officers from the six initial participating agencies who are trained to gather, analyze, and disseminate the vast amount of intelligence generated from within the participating jail and prison systems, officials said.

The center also includes remote participation from 20 additional counties in the New York area.

Sheriff Errol Toulon will announce plans to expand across the Country, and nationally, according to the release.

Corrections intelligence is underutilized in solving crimes but since Toulon took office in 2018, he has expanded collaboration with local law enforcement agencies to help solve cases utilizing intelligence from inside the Suffolk facilities, according to officials.

The center will expand on this to help cases beyond the Suffolk borders by sharing pertinent information with Task Forces embedded with the F.B.I., U.S. Marshalls, Homeland Security, as well as Suffolk police and the District Attorney’s office, and other police agencies.
