Town Invites Residents to Plaza Theatre Demolition

Brookhaven Town is accepting RSVPs for a 10 a.m. ceremony on Aug. 30 before the theatre is knocked down.

The Town of Brookhaven is now accepting RSVPs to the Aug. 30th demolition, which will commence after a held at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Grove Avenue.

Residents who are interested in attending should fill out the form on Brookhaven Town's website.

“The community has been waiting for this day for many years and in a few weeks we will finally be tearing down Plaza Theatre, a monument to blight,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko said in a statement.

Marita Morello, president of the Focus East Patchogue organization, also released a statement on the demolition.

“It’s been such a long time - 25 years - that I have been patiently waiting for this monster to come down,” Morello said. “I am looking forward to moving on to improving and getting rid of the blight on the East Patchogue corridor.”

As , the theatre, which has been since the 1980s, has remained vacant on East Main Street since its closing. Brookhaven Town took of the theatre in March from its former owner, East Main Realty Corp, through an order of condemnation after the owner rejected a $1.2 million offer from the Town.

The theatre will be by of Setauket at a cost not to exceed $23,869.

Town officials have previously said that they hope to redevelop the half acre of property as part of other projects in the East Main Street corridor.
