Town Postpones Senior Citizen Events As Coronavirus Precaution

Due to concerns over the coronavirus, Brookhaven town is postponing some events and suspending senior center activities as a precaution.

TOWN OF BROOKHAVEN, NY — Due to concerns over the coronavirus, as a precaution, town of Brookhaven officials are postponing all large senior citizen events and suspending all town Senior Citizen Center activities. According to a message from town officials, the town is closely monitoring the guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Center, New York State Department of Health and Suffolk County Department of Health.

After considering their guidance, officials decided that out of an abundance of caution, all large senior citizen events are being postponed. and senior citizen center activities will be suspended starting Thursday. However, Meals on Wheels deliveries will continue to our homebound senior citizen population, and seniors previously served by congregate nutrition programs at our senior centers will be offered meal delivery at their homes.

"Brookhaven Town is committed to protecting the health of our residents, especially vulnerable populations, and we thank you for your cooperation in our efforts," a message from the town reads.

Nassau County continues to have the highest number of cases, now reaching 25. One of those is in serious condition, county officials said at a press conference Wednesday. Suffolk county saw its cases jump overnight, going from one to six, bringing the total on Long Island to 31. There are 232 people in mandatory or precautionary quarantine in Nassau, and eight in mandatory quarantine in Suffolk.
