Women And Wilderness Survival Update

We Will Survive

In my last Patch article, dated April 11, 2018, the parent of a Girl Scout, told me that many girls, and young ladies, wanted to join the Boy Scouts because of the more rigorous training in the area of survival camping. The parent of this Girl Scout, made a suggestion that Girl Scouts should be taught survival skills. Unfortunately, this suggestion was dismissed, because of insurance concerns.

Upon close examination and comparison of the Boy Scout “merit badge,” and the Girl Scout “Badge,” I determined that they were very similar… Both allowed the scouts to learn diverse skills, by interacting with people who have specific areas of expertise, in order to earn their Merit badges, and “badges.”

The online blog that is called “gsblog;” states that the “Girl Scout Leadership Experience” pairs girls with strong, caring female role models and mentors who prepare them to take the lead from age 5 to 18 and into adulthood.” I believe this to be true, but I also believe this to be true for the Boy Scouts. Yesterday the Boy Scouts, made an announcement that females will be allowed into the Boy Scouts. They also changed their name to “Scouts BSA.” The word “boy” was omitted!

It appears that the “Girl Scouts,” which are 50 million strong were surprised by this announcement! We will have to give the Girl Scouts some time to reconsider their past policy.

Rachel Zurer, wrote an article in “backpacker.com,” and made the following statement. “We all want to provide a safe, supportive environment for girls to try, fail, and try again, but in providing that, we’ve overprotected them.”

I personally believe that every female should have survival training, but I do not believe that they should get it from joining the boy scouts. Stephanie Gosk on the Megyn Kelly show said: “Why don't the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts merge?” I disagree with Stephanie… I believe that female role models are important to female adolescents, and male role models are important to male adolescents. I believe that the Boy scouts should remain with male interaction. I also believe that the Girl Scouts should retain the valuable female role model policy.

May I suggest that the Boy Scouts and the Girl scouts work cooperatively, with the goal of making sure that all and every female gets the same survival training that is given to every Boy Scout.
