Cold Case: Woman's Car Found on the Taconic, Her Body Found in the Woods

New York State Police continue to investigate the murder of 24-year-old Sherri Orofino of Millbrook, New York, whose body was found in Cortlandt in 1987.

On March 1, 1987, Orofino was visiting a friend in Bayside, Queens. She left Bayside after 3:00 a.m. for her residence in Dutchess County, driving a black 1987 Toyota MR-2 (similar to the one shown in one of the photos attached to this article).

On March 3, 1987, the State Police were contacted by Orfino's husband who stated that she hadn’t arrived home. During the course of the investigation, Troopers learned that Orofino’s abandoned vehicle was located by Yorktown Police Department off of the Taconic State Parkway on Route 134 in the Town of Yorktown.

Six months after her disappearance, on August 9, 1987, Orfino's skeletal remains were found scattered in a densely-wooded area near the Croton Reservoir. Her body had decomposed and no apparent cause of death could be determined.

Orofino was a white female, with long blonde hair and weighed approximately 110 pounds. She was last seen wearing a yellow blouse over a black tank top, black jeans and a black jacket.

The death of Orofino continues to be actively investigated by police. Numerous leads have been followed-up on throughout this investigation, however, this homicide has never been solved. Investigators continue to comb the Croton Reservoir area searching for clues that may bring closure to Sherri’s family.
