Frank G. Lindsey's Oldest and Youngest are Reading Buddies...Online too!

Fifth graders and kindergartners collaborate on reading

This year, at the Frank G. Lindsey School, Miss Ribeiro’s kindergarten class and Mr. Levine/Ms. O’Dell’s fifth-grade class joined forces to become Reading Buddies. And what a journey it has been!

First, they started by getting to know each other with questions that the fifth grade students developed to ask the kindergartners. Then, each reading buddy brought a book that they wanted to read to their buddy. “It’s been great to see the partnerships blossom together,” Ms. Ribeiro observed.

Continuing this project, Mr. Levine and Ms. O’Dell’s students have also been inviting their buddies to explore the Chromebooks that have been piloted as part of the Instructional Technology Coach program this year.

After students discussed appropriate handling and care for the Chromebooks, fifth-graders logged in and demonstrated various programs, including Reading A-Z, Typing Club, as well as the resources and articles in Google Classroom, a virtual classroom allowing students to collaborate and submit their work online.

Once the fifth- graders had finished, they helped the kindergartners login for the first time, setup their profiles, and begin reading together!

The students had a terrific time working together. Some comments were, “It was so much fun reading with my buddy,” and “We were a team!” What a team, indeed! Reading Rocks!
