Indian Point Task Force Sets 1st Meeting: Presentations on Key Issues

CORTLANDT, NY — The first meeting of the Indian Point Closure Task Force will be held May 31, the New York State Department of Public Service announced. The purpose of the initial meeting will be to discuss the scope and goals of the Task Force. It will include presentations on key issues related to the planned closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.

The task force is to provide guidance and support to the communities, taxing jurisdictions, and employees affected by the planned closure of Indian Point.

It was charged with developing recommendations to mitigate local tax and workforce impacts, evaluating and identifying new economic opportunities and work force retraining programs and opportunities, advocating for appropriate decommissioning timelines in the best interests of local communities, and ultimately positioning the region for a prosperous and sustainable future.

Task Force Members:

  • State Representatives: Senator Terrence Murphy; Assemblywoman Sandy Galef; and several state agencies, including the Office of the Governor; Education Representatives; Department of Public Service; Department of Environmental Conservation; Department of Labor; Department of Tax and Finance; Empire State Development; New York State Energy Research & Development Authority; Department of State; New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services; and the New York Power Authority.
  • Local Representatives: Catherine Borgia, Majority Leader, Westchester County Board of Legislators; John G. Testa, Minority Leader, Westchester County Board of Legislators; Linda D. Puglisi, Supervisor, Town of Cortlandt; Joseph Hochreiter, Superintendent, Hendrick Hudson School District; and Theresa Knickerbocker, Mayor, Village of Buchanan.
  • Labor Representatives: Teamsters Local 456; Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2; and Westchester Putnam Central Labor Council.

State officials said in the meeting announcement that they have extensively and proactively planned for the eventual closure of Indian Point by making sure more than enough replacement power is available to ensure reliability, mitigate electricity price impacts and achieve environmental objectives. Already, 730 megawatts of transmission improvements and energy efficiency are in-service via the Commission's Indian Point Contingency Plan, and more generation resources are slated to come online in the near future.
