NRC Sets Public Meeting On Indian Point's Safety Performance

These public meetings were usually well attended, including the plant's opponents. Will anyone show now that closing dates are set?

CORTLANDT, NY — Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2016 safety performance of the Indian Point nuclear power plant during a public meeting on June 14. The forum will be held in Tarrytown.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., at the DoubleTree by Hilton, 455 South Broadway. NRC staff responsible for inspections and oversight of the plant, including the resident inspectors based at the site full-time, will be on hand to discuss plant performance. Doors to the meeting room will open at 6 p.m.

The Indian Point Energy Center is operated by Entergy Nuclear. Both units operated safely during 2016, NRC officials said.

The NRC conducted more than 8,000 hours of inspection at the two units last year. At the end of the year, neither unit had any inspection findings or performance indicators outside the normal range. As a result, Indian Point 2 and 3 are currently under the NRC’s baseline level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year, NRC officials said.

The NRC’s Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to measure plant performance. Any inspection findings or performance indicators that have more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.

Routine inspections are performed by resident inspectors assigned to the plant and by specialist inspectors assigned to the agency’s Region I office in King of Prussia.

The Annual Assessment letter for Indian Point and the notice for the public meeting, which includes information on the conduct of the meeting, are available on the NRC website. Current performance information for Unit 2 and Unit 3 is also available.
