NY's Indian Point Closure Task Force to Hold 2nd Meeting

CORTLANDT, NY — The second meeting of the state's Indian Point Closure Task Force will be held Sept. 28 at Cortlandt Town Hall. The purpose of the meeting will be to continue discussion on the goals and priorities of the Task Force and to report on its progress. The meeting will also include presentations on key issues related to the planned closure of Indian Point.
Members of the public are welcome to attend.
The task force is the second one created to provide guidance and support to the communities, taxing jurisdictions, and employees affected by the planned closure of Indian Point.

Local business and government leaders formed the Community Unity Task Force right after the news came out that Entergy would be closing the two plants by 2021. This task force is comprised of the Hendrick Hudson School Superintendent, Village of Buchanan Mayor and Deputy Mayor, local County Legislators and Assemblywoman, the Chamber of Commerce Director, the Hendrick Hudson Library Director, local realtors, business owners, union officials and residents. Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi is co-chair. Information on past meetings can be found on this website.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo also formed one at the state level, charged with developing recommendations to mitigate local tax and workforce impacts, evaluating and identifying new economic opportunities and work force retraining programs and opportunities, advocating for appropriate decommissioning timelines in the best interests of local communities, and ultimately positioning the region for a prosperous and sustainable future.
At its initial meeting on May 31, 2017, that task force discussed and identified initiatives to help the local community prepare for the facility to cease power generation operations and shut down, initiated the process to hire an independent consultant to understand Indian Point site reuse and reutilization options, assessed resources and opportunities for school funding gaps that might develop, and continued discussions with the local labor unions on workforce retraining opportunities.
Task Force Members include:
State Representatives: Senator Terrence Murphy; Assemblymember Sandy Galef; and several state agencies, including the Office of the Governor; Education Representatives;Department of Public Service; Department of Environmental Conservation; Department of Labor; Department of Tax and Finance; Empire State Development; New York State Energy Research & Development Authority; Department of State; New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services; and the New York Power Authority.
Local Representatives: Catherine Borgia, Majority Leader, Westchester County Board of Legislators; John G. Testa, Minority Leader, Westchester County Board of Legislators; Linda D. Puglisi, Supervisor, Town of Cortlandt; Joseph Hochreiter, Superintendent, Hendrick Hudson School District; and Theresa Knickerbocker, Mayor, Village of Buchanan.
Labor Representatives: Teamsters Local 456; Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2; and Westchester Putnam Central Labor Council.
