Summer Full Of Field Trips At Aunt Bessie's Open Door in Peekskill

Ford Piano and the Peekskill Coffee House were just 2 of the places visited by kids in the Head Start Early Childhood Program.

PEEKSKILL, NY — As part of the summer curriculum at Aunt Bessie's Open Door, children enrolled in the pre-school program visited different places in the community to learn who's around them and what they do.

Aunt Bessie's Open Door is a WestCOP Early Childhood Program that provides daycare for working families.

The program offers high quality early childhood education with individualized teaching, nutritious snacks and meals, and comprehensive services for children and families. Offering enriching experiences enhances skills and helps children develop and excel. To learn more or enroll a child, see below.

The children spent several days at the Field Library, where the librarians in the children's section had prepared a mix of songs and storybooks based on the themes they were learning about back in the classroom.

The kids also stepped into Ford Piano on S. Division St., and the man in the showroom played some songs they knew, including Twinkle Twinkle, and they sang along.

They visited the Peekskill Coffee House on S. Division Street. The owner, Sunny, and one of the baristas showed the children how to make crepes. Their favorite part was trying them with their lemonade!

They had a tour of the police station from Officer Mary Greenan, who also set up a mini-investigation for them to find her partner, Mr. Mouse. They then all got to check out a real police car.

They visited Annabella's Pizza and Pasta on N. Division Street where Violet and Luigi let the kids see what happens behind the scenes. They watched how a ball of dough becomes a pizza pie, and enjoyed the pizza when it came out of the oven.

In addition to community trips, teachers and aides also brought their classes to parks across the county, including Legoland, Stepping Stones and the Westchester Museum (where they ran into Justin Timberlake and his family) and took them bowling at Jefferson Valley Lanes.

The program has recently expanded preschool child care, so it has immediate openings. To inquire about the program call (914) 737-9166 and ask for Sara or Stacy.
