Weekend Planner: Kick Off Summer with Memorial Day Celebrations
Cortlandt, Yorktown, Peekskill parades planned to commemorate our veterans and their service. Plus, some other fun events.
Memorial Day Weekend is the official kickoff for summer. It is a wonderful opportunity to remember those that serve and have served our country, especially those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Our local towns have many ceremonies and parades to commemorate our brave military men and women. There is also a lot of fun planned for the weekend. Local Memorial Day Weekend Celebrations:
-Yorktown Memorial Day Parade: Monday, May 30, 11 a.m. ceremony; 11:15 a.m. parade; begins at Town Hall.
-Shrub Oak Memorial Day Parade: Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m. begins at 10 a.m.

-Cortlandt Memorial Day Ceremony: Friday, May 27, at 1 p.m., Cortlandt Town Hall, 1 Heady Street, Cortlandt
-Tri-Village Memorial Day Parade (Town of Cortlandt, Village of Croton-on-Hudson and Village of Buchanan): Monday, May 30, 10:30 a.m. (line up 10 a.m.). The 911 Memorial Steel will be on display. Line up at Broadway and 5th.

-Peekskill Celebration Memorial Day Carnival: Thursday through Sunday, May 26 through May 30, (Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m., Friday, 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday, and Sunday, Noon to 11 p.m., Monday, Noon to 5 p.m.; Riverfront Green Park
• Westchester County Veterans and Service Member Appreciation Day at Rye Playland:A special day at Playland that includes The West Point Band and a demonstration by the U.S. Marine Corps (weather and aircraft permitting).
Where/When: purchase Rye Playland, 100 Playland Parkway, Rye; Sunday, May 29, 11 a.m., (parking opens). The park will be open from Noon to 11 p.m. (registration will go until 5 p.m.)
Why Go:Veterans receive one free admission, free parking and family members receive a discount. West Point performs at 12:15. Picnicking is also available. Peekskill City Hall will be one of the parking pass locations this week.
Pricing:$30, all rides; $20, Kiddyland; $10, spectator (no rides) (Westchester residents receive $5 discount for each category)

• Walk in the Garden: Enjoy flowers in bloom, rock outcroppings and more, right in Cold Spring.
Where/When: Stonecrop Gardens, 81 Stonecrop Lane, Cold Spring; Saturday, May 28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Go: Free admission for Putnam and Westchester County residents (with proof of residency)

• Hilltop Hanover Farm Stand Opens for the Season: Local produce is a wonderful sign that the summer season is kicking off.
Where/When: Hilltop Hanover Farm, Barn F, 1271 Hanover Street, Yorktown Heights; Saturday, May 28, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (every Friday and Saturday through fall, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Why Go: Hilltop grows their produce without pesticides, synthesized fertilizers or herbicides.Contact Info: (914) 962-2368Animals and Acrobats:Walk back in time and see how they used to enjoy the summer with animals, acrobats, minstrels and more.

Why Go:Weekend favorites are being joined by many new performers and animals. If you purchase your tickets in advance online, everyone under 18 will receive free popcorn.
