KINETIC SPORTS CLUB TRAINER DEANETH EDWARDS SPRINTS TO THE HEAD OF THE CLASS
There are at least 60 group fitness classes available at the Kinetic Sports Club each week, and Deaneth Edwards is front and center as the instructor for an astonishing 17 of them.
Her following grows by the day, and not just because of what members get from her classes physically, but also for the intangible benefits. Take her Body Pump, a Body Combat or a GRIT class, spend a few minutes chatting with her before or after class, and suddenly you’re part of her Kinetics family.
“I’m a people-driven person,” added Deaneth, a group fitness instructor for nearly 20 years who also works part-time as a hairdresser. “I want to help people look and feel their best. I often step outside of my classes when I see people watching and invite them in. People are often intimidated by what they see in going on in a class and I tell them: ‘This class is for everyone—beginner, intermediate or advanced.’ Once I get them in, they never leave.”
When Deaneth isn’t all about improving everyone else’s fitness, she can often be found on the club’s 5,500-square-foot turf field—doing something she truly loves and something that comes naturally to her: running fast.
Deaneth—best described as a chunk of coiled muscle—is ranked No. 22 in the world in the 100-meter and No. 34 in the world in the 200-meter sprint in the 45-49 age bracket. In September, she participated in the World Masters Track & Field Championships in Spain, and ran the 100-meter in 13.9 seconds. She competed during her school years back in her native Jamaica, but gave it up without a second thought. That is, until her daughter, then 9, expressed interest in competing when they drove past a track meet a local high school one day.
“I’ll be running and competing until I die,” she said, soon to be 47, and once ranked as high as No. 7 in the world in the 100-meter. “I would be a more successful sprinter if I gave up all the other training I do, but I could never leave our members here. There’s nothing more beautiful than a group of people coming together for fitness. Our members come to my home and I cook for them. I teach four consecutive classes on Saturdays and several of them take all four classes with me. They are my energy drink—they keep me going.”
She truly believes age is a number—and is happy to spread that mindset throughout all 50,000 square feet of Kinetics to anyone who’ll listen. “I’m in better shape today than I was in my 20s and I’m inspired by people I see competing in their 70s, 80s, 90s and even people over 100. Anything you give to health and fitness you’ll get back many times over, in so many different ways.”
Kinetics is a spectacular playground for spirited athletes of all ages, and features yoga, cycle and group fitness studios, weight-training machinery, a full-line of free weights and small-group and personal training. There is also a turf field, a regulation-sized basketball court, a lap-pool and a water park—offering fitness and recreation for the entire family at an ultra-convenient lower Westchester location just off the Hutchinson Parkway.
All group fitness classes, including Deaneth’s, are included with membership.
