4TH GRADE CLASSROOMS  -- The field trips keep coming for the fourth graders. There are a total of four field trips this year for these students.

One of the big trips is Ellis Island. Last year, the fourth graders who are now fifth graders didn't get to go because of Hurricane Sandy damage. Some people are really excited about the field trips this year.

"I am looking forward to Ellis Island because I want to see the Statue of Liberty," said Tyler Chang (4G).

Another big event is the trip to the Pelham Picture House to make a film about what it was like to live through the immigrant experience. Students from 4H, 4M and 4G will all dress up like immigrants arriving at Ellis Island. Students enjoy this field trip because they get to learn what it was like back then.

Everett Banholzer (4G) said, "I am looking forward to the Pelham Picture House because I like movies."

The fourth graders also travel to Carnegie Hall in New York City, where music is offered at a low cost so they can learn. The kids also get to play music during the Carnegie Hall visit.

Isabella Cippolla (4H) said, "I am looking forward to Carnegie Hall because it is fun. Also because I like music, and to me, music is like another language. I play violin, clarinet, piano and the recorder."

Isaac Long (4H) told the Colonial Times that he is excited about Carnegie Hall "because I get to play the recorder."

Henry Smith (4H) said, "I am looking forward to Carnegie Hall because I think it is cool."

Ellis Island is the final trip of the year. Many kids want to see the Statue of Liberty on the boat ride out to Ellis Island.

"I am looking forward to Ellis Island because I will be able to see the Statue of Liberty and to see if our ancestors ever came over from other countries," said Georgia Russello (4M).

Mr. Ronald Martucci, a fourth grade teacher, said, "I liked (Philipsburg Manor) the best because it fits in the best during social studies about colonial times. Carnegie Hall, I like the music, and if the weather is nice, eating in Central Park. Pelham Picture House because it is four mini-field trips in one and the only field trip where the children get to produce their own DVD."

Both the teachers and students enjoy the learning experience of going on so many field trips through out the school year.

This story appeared in the March print edition of the Colonial Times.
