New York State wants to hire 250 engineers in the next six months. Starting salaries range from $50,000 to $77,000 a year.
Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties will receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam counties will receive an additional $1,513 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.

This is through the New York State Career Opportunities in Engineering Program, a new civil service exam program that will provide qualified engineers with immediate and continuous access to a wide array of job opportunities across state government.
There are three levels of engineers in New York State. Each level has specialized engineering titles that require specific engineering experience and/or engineering degree, NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE), or New York State Professional Engineer's License. The three levels of engineer are:

- Engineer Trainee, (NS) Equated to Grade 18
- Assistant Engineer, Grade 20
- Professional Engineer 1, Grade 24

- Chemical
- Civil
- Civil/Construction
- Civil/Geotechnical
- Civil/Structural
- Civil/Transportation
- Electrical
- Environmental
- Fire Protection
- Gas Pipeline Safety
- Industrial
- Mechanical
- Mechanical/HVAC

Candidates can apply by selecting the level of engineer, specialized engineer area, and the state agency for which they are interested in employment. Information provided in the online questionnaire will then be used to review candidate qualifications and will serve as the test for these titles.
State agencies will score online questionnaires periodically throughout the year when additional qualified candidates are needed to fill vacancies. Once added to the list of eligible candidates, individuals will have a two-year period of eligibility for appointment.
