Pelham Youth Hockey Asks for Community's Help to Win $2,500

Pelham Youth Hockey Association officials are hopeful that a last minute assist from the community will help them win $2,500 from Liberty Mutual’s Responsible Sports Community Grant Program.

Today is the last day for the contest, which asks youth sports organizations to get as many people as they can to take  a short, 10-question online quiz on being a responsible sports parent. Each youth sport association gets a credit for every quiz that is completed on their behalf.

The contest divides youth sports leagues into two divisions, based on the size of their organizations, and maintains a separate division for schools. The top seven leagues in each division win a $2,500 grant.

Pelham youth hockey, which is competing in the contest’s ‘large organizations’ division, would use the grant to provide scholarships for families who are going through a tough time, buy new equipment for its teams and fund programs that encourage children to play hockey.

“There may be some parents who are having a tough time paying the regular fee,” said Louise Kelly, a parent and volunteer with Pelham youth hockey. “I think, for a sport like hockey, the money can definitely help.”

Kamel Tarazi, treasurer for the  PHA, said the organization spends about $400,000 a year for ice time alone. Revenue from membership fees help offset those costs, but the remainder of the association’s initiatives are supported through fundraisers.

The Pelham hockey association was ranked in the top seven of its division as of Tuesday night. But the contest, which can be viewed here, remains close.

The quiz takes a few minutes to complete and is open to any U.S resident 18 and older. Follow these steps to participate:

1. Click here to take the Parent quiz  (if you get an answer wrong, just try a different answer till you get the correct one)
2. After you correctly answer all 10 questions, you will automatically be taken to a page where you enter your name and email address and enter a password of your choosing, and then a second page where you select which organization you want to credit. Please enter "Pelham Recreation Ice Hockey, Inc."
3. You will receive a verification email with a "Verify Me" link that you need to click (please don't forget this step - the credit will not count unless you do this!)
