Sentencing in Mount Vernon Toddler's Death

She was 2 1/2 when she died.

Carlton Brown, 32, was sentenced to 12 years in state prison Thursday after previously pleading guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree, a class “B” Felony, relating to the death of his girlfriend’s two-and-a-half-year-old toddler, Kali Mack, two years ago.

At 9:32 p.m. Aug. 31, 2014, Brown called 911 and reported a child was in distress. Emergency Services arrived and he told firefighters that she fell off the bed, said Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty.

She was taken to Montifiore Mount Vernon Hospital. On Sept. 1, the toddler was transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Montifiore in the Bronx and admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Medical personnel from both hospitals called in reports to the State Central Registry. The District Attorney’s Office was notified and the Mount Vernon Police Department assigned detectives to investigate.
