WEATHER UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued

See what time storms are supposed to hit today in Westchester County.

The National Weather Service Tuesday issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, effective until 4 p.m.

Heavy rains are expected in the afternoon and evening, and could begin in parts of the region by about 2 p.m., according to Patch’s new weather page.

“The heat and humidity set the stage for the threat of afternoon T-Storms,” writes Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. “A cold front will approach from the northwest… and drive cool, dry air… into the heat and humidity. That clash of air masses will cause atmospheric instability… and voila…”

Between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. is the period that poses the highest threat of heavy storms, so Potter urges caution.

“The atmospheric instability is expected to be quite high… and the chances for these storms to turn from strong to severe… is definitely a concern…,” according to Potter.
