LI Dad: I wish I knew this stuff when I had my 1st baby
Savvy Daddy - LI Dad discusses the challenges new dads and new parents face when having a newborn baby, over beer and a football game

It all started in the hospital when our 2nd daughter, Skyla was born. My wife had just gone through another c-section; she was exhausted, and breastfeeding was not coming as easily as we’d hoped. While my wife was speaking with the lactation consultant, I took Skyla, changed her diaper, swaddled her, and was cradling her as she fell asleep
That's when it happened.
The lactation consultant stopped mid-sentence, looked at me, and said something that sparked the whole idea...
Let me take you back.
I used to play rugby in college, and now I’m a lawyer with my own practice. I had to study hard and practice to get good at those things.
But like most guys, when it came to being a dad- the most important position I would ever play- I figured I would just “wing it”.

But it’s much harder than anyone admits. Who knew what your sexy cheerleader wife was going to go through, and what the heck a "lactation consultant" is to begin with?
All the books say basically 2 things: Your sex life is over, and you should make more money.
But let me tell you something they don’t tell you- LIFE IS ABOUT TO GET REAL. REALLY REAL.
So just like for rugby, I found coaches- guys who were varsity-level fathers- and I started to learn a lot about the knowledge and skills I would need to be the kind of Dad I wanted to be.
Rugby came naturally to me because I’m a big guy, I like drinking beer, and I’m good at knocking other guys around. But being a dad I took as seriously as my law degree, so I was ready by the time we had Skyla.
I didn’t think much of it at first, but I started helping my friends who were freaking out as they were starting their own families- these are the guys who were my “Bros”:
- Bros from My Rugby Team,
- Guys who were my Drinking Buddy Team,
- Dudes who were my Arm-Chair Quarterback Team.
And Together, we became a new kind of team. Our wives called us “The Savvy Daddies.”
Fast Forward to the stunned lactation consultant...
She looked at me and said “I wish other new dads could learn from you!”
*Lightbulb moment!*
Instead of letting other guys be Fumbling Fathers, we decided to teach other men to be Savvy Daddies too, while we all drink beer, watch football, and study, drill and practice the skills of Fatherhood!
Women have “Painting Night” (or whatever the heck they do), so we have “Beers, Bros, and Babies!”.
Is this just an excuse to hang out with some guys at the bar? Maybe.
