Snow, Single-Digit Temps Loom For Long Island This Week

Old Man Winter set to make his presence felt on Long Island.

A cold front moving across the region Sunday night will morph a mild January weekend into a deep freeze this week, along with the first snow accumulation of 2015 likely for Long Island.

Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for Sunday night, with wind gusts nearing 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

On Tuesday, 1-2 inches of snow is possible on the island. There’s also a chance of snow showers on Wednesday. The low Wednesday night is expected to fall into the single digits, with the mercury struggling to top freezing for most of the week.

  • Monday- Mostly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 31 by 5pm. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Breezy, with a west wind 21 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.
  • Monday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 17. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. Northwest wind 8 to 17 mph.
  • Tuesday- Snow likely, mainly after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 28. Wind chill values between 10 and 20. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
  • Tuesday Night- A slight chance of snow before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Wednesday- A slight chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 28. Blustery. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Wednesday Night- A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 7. Blustery. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Thursday- Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 18.
  • Thursday Night- A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Friday- Partly sunny, with a high near 30. Breezy.
