A Century Later, Little Has Changed at the SH Country Club
The Sleepy Hollow Country Club marked its centennial in 2011.
The , located in Scarborough, NY, was incorporated in 1911 with 600 members on board.
With its pristine 18-hole golf course, clubhouse and stables—all overlooking the Hudson River—its prestige has not faltered over the past 100 years.
According to a statement from the club, its beginnings stem from an idea of Frank Vanderlip, then-president of the National City Bank of New York, who lived in Scarborough near the 400-acre property that would become the Sleepy Hollow Country Club.

Parts of the estate, owned by Elliott and Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard, was briefly owned by William Rockefeller, before landing in Vanderlip's lap.
Woodlea, as it was called, included a mansion, which Vanderlip saw as the centerpiece for the club he envisioned.

The Woodlea clubhouse cost $895,000 to build in 1895 and still boasts much of its original structure, including the grand staircase and Tiffany window. The building's entrance, including the staircase, were recently used as the setting for in the ABC drama Pan Am.
Other features include a library, 18 guest rooms, a formal dining room and ballroom.
Once garnering the support and interest of his powerful friends, "The Most Elaborate Country Club in America," as described by one newspaper, opened in 1911, with the golf course designed two years later.
The stable and the club's horses have also been longtime staples— is still offered today.
Tennis, swimming, skeet and trap shooting and squash are among the other activities now offered at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
Stakeholders at the club are proud of the original flavor still intact a century after Vanderlip shared his vision.
Reads the statement, "Should he visit today, he would surely be able to find his way around."
