To get into the Halloween spirit, second graders in Debbie Fried’s class had a visit to Paul Villanueva’s art class. They created drawings of haunted house silhouettes and included colorful drawings of skeletons and tombstones for an added blood-curdling effect.

Students began the lesson by watching Mr. Villanueva create a drawing of his own. They learned what is a silhouette and how to draw the haunted house’s frame. Mr. Villanueva also showed them how to add some scary features to the drawing, such as a witch flying on a broomstick.

Next, it was time to begin the drawing. Mr. Villanueva provided each student with a paper that had a pink and purple background  - the silhouette of the haunted house can go right on top of it. The students began by looking for inspiration on their iPads and then started drawing the frame of the house using a ruler

The students colored the house in black and added colorful features such as pumpkins, tombstones, bats, skeletons and witches.

“I’m going to make a few pumpkins, a witch, some bats, and also a zombie who will be coming out of the front door,” said Tanner.

Harrison put pretend names on tombstones.

“I like putting names on tombstones. I made up names because they represent the person who died,” he said.
