No frost bit the apple blossoms this year, which bodes well for a splendid fall harvest. The same cool spring that helped delay and protect those blossoms has brought us field produce slowly. While May has delivered flowers and a beautiful Opening Day, its June that begins the quickly unfolding progression of early summer mileposts: last asparagus and first rhubarb, bright radishes and young garlic, fresh herbs and lettuces, strawberries, beets, peas, early summer squash, cherries and so forth. Eating by the season prompts recipes rarities like rhubarb bread and radish salads, and enhances running favorites like seared scallops or roasted meats with the addition of fresh herbs. Have a favorite recipe? Don't hold back-- share it with your farmer, they'll likely match it with suggestions of their own.
For our last market in May we have fine weather, classical music by DuoEssence, and a craft project for kids with the Nemecs. Warwick Valley Winery & Black Dirt Distillery will make a first visit of the season with their wines and unique items from the distillery like Single Barrel Bourbon, Apple Jack, and Warwick gin. Also note that we have special visits by Maupston Design Studio and Harper Keehn Knife Sharpening. Combined with the promise of June's farm fresh produce, its all pretty exciting.
The Interactive Map of the Market is Back
The Market has a number of ways for shoppers to stay on top of which vendors are in each week. By far the most popular tool is our always up-to-date, interactive Map of the Market. Click here to view exactly who is in this Saturday. We also list Rotation Vendors for the week (and any expected absences) in the left hand column of each newsletter. Lastly, visit our Vendor Page to review a listing of all our vendors with notes on the frequency of their visits, and links to their websites.
Knife Sharpening for 2 Weeks, starting Saturday
Bring in your favorite knives to the Market to see them sharpened on site, or delivered sharp the following week. Steel knives only need careful attention to be as good as new, and Harper Keehn, from New Paltz, New York is our visiting specialist. Make cooking a joy by turning your blunt knives into chef-worthy tools of the trade! Harper Keehn will visit the market on 5/31 and 6/7.

ONLINE SHOPPING:
a first for a
Westchester Market
Big news! Part of what makes the Pleasantville Farmers Market great is the experience. But if you just can't make it on a Saturday, you can now get the same fresh, regionally sourced foods delivered to your home.
Using Fresh Nation's new Pleasantville Farmers Market online store you can browse items from participating farmers and food artisans that you know. Orders must be placed by noon on Fridays. Deliveries are made promptly on Saturday and are sourced directly from the Market that morning. Prices are the same as in the Market, plus a small delivery fee.
Many companies are establishing food delivery services, and most compete with farmers and the markets providing them opportunities for direct retail sales. The Pleasantville Farmers Market has located in Fresh Nation a company whose service supports the existence of physical farmers markets. As opposed to many services which store foods in hubs to go out at a delay, Fresh Nation shops items at the Market, on Saturday, and then delivers directly. Pretty Fresh idea, right?
