Carrie E. Tompkins First Graders Participate In PepsiCo Science Experiment
The students got the opportunity to receive hands on experience to enhance their science unit about matter.
From Croton Harmon Schools: Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School first-graders in Patricia Lynch’s class took science into their own hands with the help of Kathlene McManus, the parent of one of the students who works as a food scientist for PepsiCo, on Feb. 14.
“The students smelled the different liquid flavors and decided which they preferred,” said Lynch. “Using safety goggles and eye droppers during the mixing phase, they carefully created their own special beverage by combining water and flavoring.”
The hands-on activity tied into the Croton-Harmon students’ science unit that explores matter.

Students also conducted experiments to prove that all liquids are not created equally by exploring and comparing the viscosity of colored water, corn syrup, maple syrup and shampoo.
“They raced the liquids and learned a property of maple syrup is that it runs very slowly, especially compared to water,” said Lynch. “A big ‘thank you’ goes out to Ms. McManus for volunteering her time in the classroom to enhance our science unit.”
