Cross Country: Pleasantville Readies for League Meet

PHS girls and boys squads will compete in league championships.

Pleasantville’s girls (8-4) and boys (4-8) cross-country squads will be ready to go when they compete in the league championship meet at Croton Point Park on Wednesday.

“Our goal will be to finish in the top three for both the boys and girls in an eight-team field and to have a number of runners earn All-League honors (top 12 at the meet),” Coach Tom Patterson said. “Beyond that, the Westchester County meet on Oct. 29 at Croton Point and the Section 1 meet at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls on Nov. 4 are key meets where we hope to give our young teams the experience of competing among the elite in the area.”

The biggest team highlight so far for Pleasantville came at the JFK Sterling Invitational on Sept. 24 where the girls brought home a third place team trophy.

Individually, for the boys, sophomore Zeke Brynin has emerged as one of the top runners in the league.

“He has a very good chance of earning All-League honors as does junior Joe Bennetti,” Patterson said. “Sophomores Charlie Finn and Brendan Holloran along with freshman Eamon Coburn have solidified their positions in the top five.”

For the girls, sophomore Jianna Bennetti has been running very competitively and will likely earn All-League honors. Freshmen Liana Frasca and Rachel Cooper have established themselves as the No. 2 and 3 runners on the team and could earn All-League honors as well.

Overall, it’s been a very gratifying season to watch the improvement of the team from week to week, according to Patterson.

“Both the boys and girls are very young teams with no seniors on either team and we are loaded with very talented underclassmen,” Patterson said. “For the boys, eleven different runners have run in the top seven during the year which provides healthy competition for the varsity spots and reflects the depth of the team. The girls have been competing very well despite dealing with a number of injuries. It seems like each week someone different steps up to run a great race to help the team.”
