Men’s Basketball Rallies Past Assumption in the Second Half

PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Setters rallied back in the second half to defeat the Greyhounds of Assumption College 56-52 in Northeast-10 Conference action. Pace improves to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds fall to 6-4 and 4-3 in conference play.
Assumption would lead for the entire first half as they jumped out to a 17-8 lead with 11:02 remaining in the half. The Setters would battle back, hitting 4-of-5 at the line to slice the score down to 19-15. The Greyhounds answered 7-0 burst and pull ahead 28-17 with 2:55 left in the half. Pace closed the half strong as Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John’s College) hit a jumper at the buzzer as the Setters would trail 29-22 at the break.

The Greyhounds added to their halftime lead as they would build an 11-point lead at 40-29 with 13:45 left in the game. Pace would flip the script as they used a 20-9 run over a 10-minute stretch to take a two-points lead with 3:52 remaining in the game.
Primus-Devonish scored seven points in the run, including a triple early in the rally, while Adrian Mills (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI) hit a pair of clutch trifectas. Mills totaled 10 points in the rally with a fastbreak lay-up and later tied the game at 47 with 6:23 left on a running floater in the paint. Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) capped the run with a lay-up to put the Setters up 49-47 with 3:52 left in the game.
Assumption tied the game at 49 on a pair of free throws but back-to-back jumpers by Primus-Devonish and Mills put Pace in the lead for good at 53-49. The Greyhounds connected on a triple but the Setters were clutch in the waning seconds as Ahmad George (Bowie, MD/Archbishop Carroll) (2-for-2) and Primus-Devonish (1-for-2) hit free throws to seal a key conference victory for Pace. The Setters defense was a major factor in the second half as the Greyhounds shot 8-for-24 (33.3%) from the field in the final 20 minutes.
For Pace, Mills led the way with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Primus-Devonish totaled 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Williams led the Setters in rebounding with seven along with three steals.
The Setters return to action on Friday, December 30 when Pace will host Saint Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference game at 3:30 pm at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Women’s Basketball Falls to #14 Assumption

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Pace University women’s basketball team fell to #14 Assumption College 70-56 in Northeast-10 Conference match-up. The Setters fall to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds, ranked #14 in the USA Today/ESPN Division Top-25 Coaches Poll, improves to 9-0 and -0 in conference play.
The teams played a close game midway through the opening half as the Setters held a slim 18-17 lead with 11:24 left in the half. Assumption would take the lead and pull ahead 26-19, eventually took an eight-point lead into the break at 34-26.
Assumption extended their halftime advantage in the lead half as they would pull ahead to a 45-34 lead with 13:54 left in the contest. The Setters rallied with an 11-2 run as Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) got the Pace run going with a three-point play at the 13:27 mark. Allison Cleary (New Windsor NY/Cornwall Central) hit a key trifecta, while Carol Johnson (New City, NY/Cardinal Spellman) also converted a three-point play in the run.
Shields capped the run with 11:17 left in the game with a lay-up to pull the Setters to within two points at 47-45. The Greyhounds held off the Setter rally as they would push their lead to 63-47 with 4:27 left in the game and would take the win.
For Pace, Shields led the Setters with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Cleary finished with nine points, while Maral Javadifar (Flushing, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) totaled nine points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Setters return to action on Friday, December 30 when Pace will host Saint Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference game at 1:30 pm at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Boys youth hoops
Pleasantville's boys seventh grade A division squad played an exciting game against Scarsdale Dec. 11 but fell 49-45 in the Tri-County Basketball League.
