Ebola Evaluation at Westchester Hospital

The county health commissioner says recently most patients with these signs have had malaria.

A Westchester hospital is caring for a patient with signs of Ebola who just returned from West Africa, officials said.

“The Westchester County Department of Health is working with the hospital and treating physician to evaluate a patient with fever who recently traveled to an Ebola-affected country,” said Sherlita Amler, MD, head of the county’s Health Department. “All appropriate infection control measures are in place, including isolation and personal protective equipment for healthcare providers.”

The hospital in question is St. Joseph Medical Center in Yonkers, according to NBCNewYork.com. The patient is quarantined.

Amler downplayed the risk in her statement to the press.

“The most common diagnosis in travelers with fever who have recently returned from Ebola-affected countries has been malaria,” she said.
