Healthy Life Series Continues in April at Phelps

Phelps offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups

Wednesday, April 1 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games. In the Boardroom from 2 -3:30 pm. Call 914-366-3937 to register.

Wednesdays, April 1 and 15 - Blood Pressure Screenings Conducted the first and third Wednesday mornings of every month from 9:30 – 11:30 am in the Walkway Conference Room. Appointments are required. To make an appointment, call 914-366-3220.

Friday, April 3 - Tai Chi Six Week Series Tai chi is a graceful form of exercise that helps reduce stress and is beneficial for a variety of other health conditions. Tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Ben Leavitt will lead the group. From 9:30 – 10:30 am in Boardroom. Monday, April 6 - Look Good . . . Feel Better® is a free 2-hour workshop that teaches beauty techniques to women undergoing cancer treatment. The program includes a hair consultation with a professional stylist and a makeup consultation with a cosmetologist. Attendees can take home a complimentary wig and a make-up kit donated by cosmetic companies. The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, The National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. Tuesday, April 7 - HeLP - Health for Life Program Free six week workshop on how to put life back into your life. The techniques you learn, the knowledge you gain and the support you receive from the group helps you take more control over your life. You become more empowered in managing your health and tend to maintain a more active lifestyle. The program helps you develop a plan and set weekly goals that help you realize success in accomplishing small, incremental goals. Tuesday, April 7 - Elder Law Series: Estate Planning/Elder Law 101 Nuts and bolts of estate planning to preserve your assets. Wednesday, April 8 - LSVT “BIG”: Movement Therapy for Parkinson’s Patients The LSVT BIG program is a physical therapy program designed to improve the major motor skills of people with Parkinson’s disease by retraining their movements. The exercises, led by LSVT BIG-certified physical therapists, specifically address an increase in motion of the arms and legs, as well as turning of the trunk and walking. The program is designed to increase walking speed, improve balance and enhance quality of life. Thursday, April 9 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors that meets monthly, except for August and December. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. This month participants will receive information on balance with Dr. Carmen Budenz, the new director of the Phelps Balance Center. The group meets from 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level). Thursday, April 9 - Osteoporosis Support and Education A free monthly group program for individuals with osteoporosis, providing education on nutrition, exercise (weight-bearing, strengthening and balance) and activities of daily living. The sessions are held from 11 am to 12:30 pm the second Thursday of the month in the Boardroom (C Level). Call 914-366-2270 to register.

Thursdays, April 9 and 23 – Bereavement Support Group An ongoing support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 2 – 3:30 pm in the James House. Friday, April 10 - Balance Therapy If you are having balance issues, learn balance exercises and strategies to use at home from certified vestibular therapists. Wednesday, April 15 - Demystifying Medicare & Healthcare Coverage for Seniors This presentation is perfect for anyone trying to navigate their way through our complicated healthcare system for older adults. It will help those who already have Medicare, as well as people soon to be 65, planning their retirement, or assisting relatives and friends with their medical decisions. From 6:30 – 9:30 pm in the Boardroom. The program outlines the various parts of Medicare and lays out the costs associated with the medical and drug insurance provided by the government and private companies. Topics will include original Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, prescription drug plans (Part D), Medigaps (supplemental plans), and cost-saving programs like EPIC that can help seniors with limited resources. Monday, April 20 – Balance Screenings for people who are having trouble with dizziness or imbalance. This is an opportunity to speak with a specialist about your balance problems and receive guidance regarding the next steps for evaluation. From 8:45 -10 am. Cameron Budenz, MD, otolaryngologist with subspecialty training in evaluation and management of vestibular (balance) disorders and Medical Director of the Phelps Balance Center. Tuesday, April 21 – Senior Steps offers health screenings for seniors. This month’s screening is for people who have difficulty with strength and flexibility in their hands. Senior Steps meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00-11:30 am in various locations throughout the hospital. To make an appointment, call 914-366-3937.

Tuesday, April 21 - I Need Hearing Aids? What consumers need to know before purchasing hearing aids. Where do I go? Who do I see? How do I decide what to get? What are my legal rights as a consumer? Monday, April 27 - Yoga for Professional Voice Users, for teachers, singers, lawyers and clergy. Tuesday, April 28 – Controlling the Pain of Arthritic Knees Without Undergoing Surgery Orthopedic Surgeon J. Robert Seebacher will discuss a non-surgical therapy that often helps people with arthritic knees maintain an active lifestyle while postponing or eliminating the need for surgery. Learn how injections and exercise can enable reconditioning and reduction of inflammation and pain. Presented by J.
