Search Continues for Hawthorne Man Who Lept from Tappan Zee
The 24-year-old Hawthorne man is believed to have jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge Wednesday afternoon.
While suicide attempts off the Tappan Zee Bridge are not always successful—in July, a man who jumped naked —authorities are calling the search for Scott Uzzo a recovery, not a rescue.
The 24-year-old Hawthorne man reportedly at about 2:53 p.m. into choppy waters and high winds. Rescue authorities on both sides of the river had to call off the search after about one hour, and did not hit the Hudson again until earlier this morning.
"At this point, it's not a rescue, it's a recovery," explained J.P. Natkin, Westchester County's deputy fire coordinator, at the scene yesterday. "It doesn't make sense to jeopardize any more people. You'd get hypothermia fast out there. And the tide is out."

Still, state troopers resumed combing the waters this morning. Uzzo's family is aware of the search, and have been talking with authorities; his brother arrived at the bridge shortly after Uzzo jumped, and was later escorted to state police barracks in Tarrytown.
According to MaxPreps.com, Uzzo graduated from Westlake High School in 2005, where he played football.
