Farmers market shoppers know their input matters. Mesclun, specialty eggplants, arugula, heirloom tomatoes and many other items, now commonplace at markets, began as shopper suggestions to farmers. The Pleasantville Farmers Market also values customer input. Please take a moment now and help make your Market better by participating in our annual survey (participants are eligible for a prize drawing of gift certificates and Market t-shirts!)
Eat Your Vegetables:
Market Sponsor Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, and moms everywhere, have been pointing out for years that vegetables are good for you. This week's Phelps Health Tip restates this classic advice:
"Based on some estimates, vegetables supply over 50% of vitamins C and A, and much of our B6, magnesium, niacin, thiamin, and iron. Eating a variety of seasonal plant foods, which supply these and many more nutrients, can help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease."
The Phelps Memorial Hospital Center will have a representative visiting the Market Saturday. Stop by to share your appreciation of their support for the Market and learn about the many services and programs they offer just 4.5 miles down the road from Pleasantville.
Cukes: Best Crop Flavor-wise in Years
If you following Phelps' (and your mother's) advice, the Market is the right place to be inspired by abundant, fresh fruits, berries and vegetables. Little Seed Gardens reports they've had ideal conditions for cucumbers, producing an ample supply, and that this is the best crop flavor-wise in years. They state that their peppers and eggplants are in too. Madura Farm also has cukes (blonde, Kirby, and regular), delicious green beans, and the first corn of the season. J&A Farm, Cowberry Crossing Farm and Newgate Farm fill out our terrific selection of produce, with Newgate also specializing in berries. Newgate Farm and Mead Orchard are at peak for blueberries, and Mead also mentions that they'll have their first plums, as well as tart cherries and sweet Romanesco cherries. Breezy Hill Orchard will have cherries too, fresh and in their buttercrust pies.
In the Summer Heat, Keep it Simple
Planning to barely use the kitchen when it gets hot? Breakfast with market bread, Conant Valley Jams' freshly made BluBarb or Wild Raspberry Jam, and cold butter from Ronnybrook (through Amazing Real Live Food). Keep lunch simple with crisp salads and fresh fruit. Clean the grill and get serious about the Market's super selection of meats and seafood. A chilled bottle of Whitecliff Vineyard's Awosting White is a hot weather favorite. And let others do the baking: Red Barn Bakery has locally sourced savory baked goods. And gluten-free Spoonful of Sugar Bake Shop has developed frangipane tarts topped with fresh cherries and peaches. With a dairy free, almond-based filling (reminiscent of custard) and a lemon flavored crust infused with Amaretto di Saronno, one can't help but feel a need to slow down and savor the season.

Made in the Shade:
In addition to a summer harvest of delicious food, the Market has delightful activities Saturday. Enjoy resting on cushions in the shade while listening to the very dynamic guitar duo Isra-Alien. And bring your kids to create a market craft project with Greg and Kat Nemec in our shaded Kids Activity area. The kids will be making beautiful loop-de-loop butterflies.
