Superfoods

We feel super about having been voted Best Of Westchester in 2014 by readers of Westchester Magazine. We know this achievement is due to having terrific farmers and food artisans, as well as loyal shoppers who really enjoy seeing these producers every week. We'll use the honor as motivation to work even harder to bring you the best market possible, every week.

One of the best things about fresh regional foods is that so many are in fact superfoods, which can help keep you (and our regional farms) going strong. If you need some helpful pointers on the subject we have Market Nutritionist Marina Stopler visiting Saturday, as part of her regular Lets Talk series. She will share information about superfoods, referencing many fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices you can get at the Market.

Charge Up with Chard:
Market Sponsor Phelps Memorial Hospital Center has been highlighting some pretty super foods lately too. Last week they noted the benefits of the fresh cherries and blueberries (medicinal powerhouse fruits). This week the Phelps Health Tip highlights Swiss chard:
"Sometimes referred to as the silverbeet, chard and rainbow chard provide antioxidant beta-carotene, vitamin K, magnesium, potassium and sodium, and can be eaten raw in salads or cooked quickly and paired with lemon juice and olive oil."

Need Music?

The Market will not have Music or Kids Events this Saturday.
For a Saturday dose of rhythm, after shopping the Market early, get over to the Pleasantville Music Festival. Music and Kids Events will be back at the Market next week.

Thanks Myrtle
Tara Bryson of The Butterfield Farm Company brought her assistant Toshua and Myrtle the wonderful Nubian goat last Saturday. Toshua helped children learn about Myrtle, life on the farm, and all the terrific things that can be done with goats milk. Our Market Interns helped kids create a 24' crayon mural for Tara and Toshua to take home to hang in their barn. To view some images from the mural and from the visit by Myrtle click here.

Chicken and the Egg
Katie Bogdanffy is transitioning from her family's Feather Ridge Farm to one of her very own: Yellow Bell Farm. During this phase, she will continue to have whole roasters and chicken parts, but will not have eggs. Campanelli's Poultry Farm joined the Market this spring with poultry and eggs of their own. The Market also has Breezy Hill Orchard's Knollcrest Farm eggs for sale too. Both are great sources for eggs for shoppers seeking to adjust while Yellow Bell Farm establishes their own egg production. Katie Bogdanffy reports she will have perfect 3- 4lb chickens Saturday. Check out her fun Yellow Bell Farm recipe for Beer Can Chicken.

Looking for More Flavor When Grilling?
Guyank Brand visits Saturday. This husband-wife team makes Guyanese-inspired, sweet hot, tangy spicy, and fruity jams, sauces and marinades. If that doesn't entirely cover your needs Trotta Foods reports that they have sourced Newgate Farms and J&A Farm for tomatoes and garlic to create fresh Bruschetta. This appetizer is great on any grilled dish. Seek out either vendor to cure a case of bland meats or vegetables in your menu.

Need More Flavor in the Skillet?
Garlic scapes are at peak. Look over this great set of recipes for garlic scapes from Maria Reina, of Bella Cucina Maria and the Seasonal Chef for the Small Bites Blog.

Black Dirt Bourbon
The producers of the critically acclaimed Doc's Craft Hard Apple Cider are also front and center in our region's growing farm distillery movement. They created New York's first Fruit Distillery to produce apple and pear brandies and a line of natural fruit liqueurs. They report, with some fanfare, that their Batch 4 of the much anticipated Black Dirt Bourbon has been released, and will be available at the Market.

Summer Sunflowers
Complimenting the wonderful bouquets The River Garden brings to market, Newgate Farms will have sunflowers of their own this week - $5 for a bunch.

Blueberries & Cherries!
Check out Mead Orchards and Breezy Hill Orchard (sour cherries too) for these seasonal treats, and keep an eye on Newgate Farms as they will have blueberries and raspberries soon too.
